Brigades go head-to-head

By Capt William Heck
IT WAS no coincidence the Australian Army Band Brisbane were playing Holy Grail as the players ran on to Ballymore for the finals of the Men’s Inter-Brigade Rugby competition. The men’s final was a hard fought but one-sided affair, with the Combined Brigade proving far too strong for the 1 Bde team winning 40 points to 6. Pte Mahn Darley, of 1CSSB, was fullback for 1 Bde and awarded Player of the Tournament. He said his team put their hearts into the game but couldn’t stop the Combined Brigade side on the day, which was made up from players from 6, 16 and 17 Bdes and took on teams from 1, 3 and 7 Bdes. It was a different story in the women’s sevens, which ended with a thrilling come from behind victory for the 3 Bde team over the highly fancied Combined Brigade team. Behind 12-0 at the break, the 3 Bde women produced the biggest upset of the tournament to take the game 24-19. Soldiers from 7 Bde comfortably won both their Rank 3 vs Rank 4 games in the round robin, with the women’s team winning easily against 1 Bde and the men’s team humbling the 3 Bde team 48-0.
