Army Rugby Announces New Inter-Brigade Rugby Union Competition

The President of Army Rugby, Major General John Caligari, recently announced that a new inter-brigade rugby union competition will begin in 2013. “Rugby Union has been a popular sport in the Army since its inception and the Australian Army Rugby Union’s mission is to promote and develop Rugby Union throughout the Australian Army.” he said. The inter-brigade competition will be held in Brisbane between 29 April and 3 May 2013. Teams will come from 1 Brigade, 3 Brigade, 7 Brigade and a combined 6 Brigade/16 Brigade/17 Brigade side. “The competition will involve both men’s and women’s teams” said Colonel Clay Sutton, Army Rugby’s Vice-President for Operations. “The men’s competition will be 15 a side and the women’s competition seven a side.” Army Rugby will sponsor and 7 Brigade will host the competition. Interested players should seek further information from their Brigade rugby officers. Major General Caligari also called for suggestions for the naming of the cup to be awarded to the champion team on 3 May 2013. “I think the name of the Cup needs to reflect the history of rugby union in the Army and perhaps the contribution it has made in creating smart and tough soldiers” he said. Entries for the competition can be submitted to the Secretary of Army Rugby at secretary@armyrugby.org.au
